General Issues in School

Click on the following quick links to jump to the relevant section:

Coats
Coats must be removed as soon as you enter the building and then put straight into lockers. You cannot carry coats around school with them. You can wear your coat at break or lunch but it can only be worn outside. Students wearing coats at other times or inside will receive a C3 detention. You can collect your coat at the end of the school day from your locker.

Cashless Catering for food and drink
To purchase food and drink in school you will ‘pay’ by placing your finger on a scanner which will debit money from your account. This is a secure and fast way of making sure you get your food and drink of your choice. All dinner tickets will be credited to your account.

Putting Money on your account (charging your account)
In the main Atrium there are 3 Pay Stations. You will have their finger scanned on the Pay Station. Once your photograph and account appears on the screen you can pay money onto your account. The machines only accept coins. The School Shop will accept notes and cheques which will then be inputted onto your account if this is more helpful.

MP3 players / ipods / mobile phones
We advise that you do not bring MP3 players / ipods / mobile phones to school because they are worth a lot of money. The school will not take any responsibility whatsoever for the loss of any of these items.

Should you choose to bring these items to school then they need to be turned off and out of sight at all times. The school reserves the right to confiscate these items. If they are seen they will be passed to Mr Johnson (Headteacher) who will not return them until 3pm at the earliest.

Cameras
There are over 100 cameras in and around the new school.

THESE ARE HERE FOR OUR SAFETY

The cameras are located in many different places, for example;

  • Reception - to make sure we know who is entering and leaving the building
  • Corridors - so we can make sure that everyone is where they should be. Also that we can watch for any behaviour that is unacceptable
  • Public areas of toilets - these cameras are in the areas of the toilets where you wash your hands. There are also smoke detectors
  • Fire Escapes - in an emergency fire escapes need to be clear and not damaged in any way. The cameras will make sure that the fire escapes remain safe. They could save your life! All fire escapes are out-of-bounds unless the emergency alarm sounds
  • The Atrium - there will be lots of students in the atrium at break and lunchtimes. The cameras will help us make sure everyone is safe and well.
All cameras are recorded on a hard drive and the information stored. Any camera, from any place at any time can have their film looked at if we need to.

Remember - cameras are here for your safety

Uniform Reminder
You are expected to wear uniform at all times, to identify not only with each other but also with the good name of the school. This gives the school a good name in the community and gives you a sense of pride. The uniform policy is practical, widely available and involves minimum expense for parents. It also helps prevent bullying.

Name Badges
You will have your own name badge. This needs to be worn at all times throughout the school day. The badge will be worn above the Failsworth logo on the jumper. The badge is part of the school uniform. It will be a C3 detention for not having your name badge.

Standards
You are expected to come to school with basic equipment. This includes Pen, Pencil, Ruler, Diary and a strong bag (not a carrier bag). You should also be in full uniform including the new tie (all students will be given a new tie in the new school) and name badge. This will be checked by Form Tutors everyday. It will be a C3 detention for not having your equipment. This is because you are not equipped to learn.

Punctuality
There is no movement time in the new school. Being on time for lessons is very important because it means you have more time to learn. If you are late it will be recorded and made up at lunchtimes.

Attendance
We expect 95% attendance or better. We have a new register system which is completed on computer in every lesson. It is important that you do not miss any lessons because it affects your learning. Remember 90% attendance works out at ½ a year missed of education in 5 years.

Warning Bells
The warning bell will sound 5 minutes before the start of school, the end of break and the end of lunch. This will remind you to move to lessons and visit their lockers as needed.

Lockers
Lockers are provided for all students. They must be kept in the same condition as when you got them as they are part of the school furniture. Only school padlocks can be used and these will be provided. Any other type of lock will be cut off. You can access lockers before school, break time, lunchtime and after school. Lockers cannot be accessed between lessons.

Being late to lessons because you had to go to your locker will not be an excuse.

Note if you loose your padlock you will be charged for another.

Health and Safety
We all have a part to play in making sure everyone is safe at school. This includes:
  1. Not using the fire escapes unless it is an emergency. They are alarmed. Fire escape areas are out of bounds unless there is an emergency. These areas have cameras on them
  2. Students must behave responsibly on the balcony areas
  3. Take care when using the stairs and no running in the building
